This concert was recorded in 1999 at the magnificent 500 year old gothic Amandus Church in Germany, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Goethe's birth with a program of scenes of his masterpiece Faust set to music by Robert Schumann.
Robert Schumann was not only a musician but also a student of the arts, highly educated in classical literature. The imaginative and mysterious subject of Goethe's Faust had a magnetic pull on many Romantic composers, including Schubert, Verdi, Berlioz, Liszt, and Spohr. Schumann worked almost a decade on his Scenes From Gothe's Faust, creating a stunning counterpart to Gothe's masterwork and a remarkable addition to his own highly prolific career.
