Orpheus in the Underworld, Offenbach's burlesque on the Greek legend of Orpheus, is the tale of a dissolute group of gods, who, bored with the cushioned confines of Mount Olympus, decide to go slumming in Hell. Offenbach's famous "can-can" is, as ever, a high point in this opera, as is the stupendous entry into Hell via a steaming locomotive, which crash-lands through the ceiling! This witty and elegant production was recorded live at Brussels's spectacular Theatre de la Monnaie.
