Waldo (Redford) makes a living selling rides in Nebraska, and telling tall tales about facing off against Ernst Kessler, the Black Knight of Germany, during his days as a World War I flying ace.
The film depicts his friendly rivalry with Axel Olsson, their ill-fated wing-walking act with Axel's girlfriend, Mary Beth (Sarandon), and Waldo's long-dreamed-of dogfight with Kessler.
